Dubai’s New One Day Court29-03-2018
Dubai’s new “One Day Court”, also known as “One Day Misdemeanor Court", initiative was approved by His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, as part of Penal Order Law No. 1 of 2017 on 7th March 2017 with the aim to ensure instant justice in the legal process for some types of minor offences, including but not limited to alcohol related offences, residency, traffic cases, and cheque disputes.
As a result of this recent initiative, Public Prosecution and courts based at police stations in the Emirate of Dubai will now be able to deliver verdicts within twenty-four (24) hours through a two-phase verdict process. Minor offenses can now be directly handled and settled by the Public Prosecution by way of a “punitive order” or issuance of fines without the involvement of the courts. Some examples of such offences are:
- Driving without a valid license;
- Involvement in traffic accidents resulting in injury;
- Possession and consumption of alcohol;
- Illegal entry and residency in UAE;
- Signing cheques without sufficient funds, and many more.
